About Us

We at
Teach Autistic Children Today are a new non-profit organization working to help children with autism have a happy and independent future. We believe that to create that future we must ensure that children with autism get intensive therapeutic services as early as possible.

To accomplish that end, we will fund therapeutic services for families in need so they don’t have to wait until they can get help through the
Maryland Autism Waiver, if they are even able to get it at all.

Over 2,000 children were on the waiver waiting list at last check, and many or most of these children will not even qualify for the services. Why? Because Autism Waiver services are only for children who qualify for an institutional level of care – the most severe cases. However, we at Teach Autistic Children Today believe that all children with autism should be helped!

Treatment for autism can include a wide range of therapeutic and biomedical options. Each child must be evaluated individually and a treatment plan regularly re-evaluated. Unfortunately, many insurance companies deny treatment when the diagnosis is listed as autism. That’s right. You could go to your insurance company for speech therapy and if your child’s diagnosis is autism, the insurance may deny your request. We’ve seen it many times.

Other insurance companies severely limit treatment options. The cost of just one hour of speech therapy a week can equal around $400 a month. One option many families use to deal with the high cost of therapy is to hire assistant therapists who work in cooperation with certified therapists. These in-home assistants cost substantially less, but many insurance companies will not pay for them.
